K-pop recommendation:

Don’t wanna cry – SEVENTEEN

About the concept

It’s about grieving over that one person who dared to walk away from us and how we desperately wait for them to come back. Sometimes the person whom we loved the most leave us without any trace, as if nothing happened. After they go, everything will be different. The lyrics give more depth to those emotions. Even though we feel like bursting out at any minute, we hold our tears, pretending to be strong and hopelessly taking an unknown road to find them again. Our heart finds it difficult to accept what our mind already knows and thus leaving us left behind in the dark, not crying but alone and numb.

Opinion on the mv and choreography

The music video also portrays about the harsh reality of facing someone leaving from our life. The scene starts with the members walking away from their ex-lovers or loved ones which are shot in a long distance and thus making their faces anonymous. Each members are shown inwardly experiencing various emotions revolving around yearning for the person they lost like running, falling into a pool or wandering in the streets. Their emotions are well expressed when they sit alone with the weight of their own thoughts. Some background scenes are set under the moody lighting of the night and indoor scenes to depict their feelings.

The choreography matches with each and every beat perfectly. The tutting sequence lying on the floor during the first chorus stands out the most. The dance steps were not same for the repetitive chorus part making it more interesting to watch.

Personal likes and dislikes

1. The highlights of this music is obviously their chorus part.
2. Visually all the members were looking dashing but I found Wonwon and Joshua more attractive and emotional.
3. I loved that particular dance step in which they tilt their body like falling and then immediately recoil back just like how we hold our tears from dropping down.
4. The background sets and colors used in the video are also brilliant. Back and white filters, standing under the red lights, roaming in streets at dark and dancing on a dry land or on top of a building portrays their emotions very well.

Favorite lyrics or part

Don’t play around, I know you’re there
I feel like you’ll appear so I wait aimlessly
I need to go find you, go find you
Tears are building up and start to blur (my vision)

I don‘t want to cry (Ay, Ay)
I don’t want to cry (Ay, Ay)
Although I have a lot of tears (Ay, Ay)

English / western song recommendation:

Monster– Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes

This collab of two of my favorite singers is all I’ve ever wanted!! The song is kind of sad as the lyrics explains how much we expect and seek perfection from a celebrity or someone who is in high position. Thus they are consequently put under high pressure and are afraid of the world if they make any small mistakes.

About mv

The music video is set in a pitch dark forest under full moon where a stage is placed in the center. As both the artists climb up to the stage, symbolizing their peak of fame, they get all lonely and fear of their each bad actions being considered as an act of monster. We can see Shawn climbing first but Justin already standing beside him which kind of make sense because Justin made a debut at very young age even before Shawn started his singing career.

Personal likes

1. The flashing lights in the mv at the end of chorus part was so cool.

2. Their voices and harmony sounded perfect together.

3. They both had a line like “you put me on a pedestal and told me I’m the best” and “I was 15 when the world put me on a pedestal”, which were so emotional. It’s an idiom meaning – to believe as if someone is perfect or without any flaws. Expecting someone to be all perfect puts enormous pressure on their head and you can see why they were afraid to make mistakes or feared of being judged by others.

4. I also liked the line that says “holding it against me like you’re the holy one“. No one is good or perfect in this world so who are you to turn against on someone based on their bad traits as if you are the most purest person?

Favorite lyrical lines

Made some bad moves trying to act cool, upset by their jealousy (uh-uh)
Lifting me up (lifting me up), lifting me up (yeah)
And tearing me down (down), tearing me down (down, down), yeah

  1. Don’t wanna cry has to be one of the best songs not just by seventeen but in the entirety of kpop for me ….and yes it’s always a pleasure to read your thoughts here ❤❤❤

  2. I love both of these songs wholeheartedly ❤️❤️❤️ Don’t wanna cry is my favorite Seventeen song and everything about it is just beautiful and emotional. And Monster is one of the best collabs ever, I don’t know why people expect them to be perfect. They always forget how much they’re doing already.
The way you are choosing the songs for this series is amazing Pavithra!

    1. Happy to hear that ❤️
You are absolutely right!! I agree, it was the best of collab. People always have the tendency to point out mistakes rather than noticing their achievements.
Thank you so much for your uplifting compliments 😊

  3. I love Monster too! ‘holding it against me like you’re the holy one’ changed my attitude towards Justin. I used to not appreciate him for being mean to his fans, but yeah, I forgave him after that line.

    1. You are right!! That’s my favorite line too. Even I thought the same about him at first, the way he treats his fan but when we put ourselves in his shoes, maybe we would have reacted the same way. No one actually knows the amount of pressure and burden that a celebrity carries. No one is good enough in this world to point finger at someone.
      Thank you for sharing.
