Butter song review

BTS released another English single Butter following their smashing hit ‘Dynamite‘. ‘Butter’ MV received 112.8M+ views and 8.6M+ likes on YouTube in its first 24 hours of release. Considering both the songs are entirely in English, it is getting more attention from all over the world while breaking numerous records.

About the mv and choreography

Butter is a fresh dance pop music giving out the charismatic charms of each members. The whole song and the music video (MV) is a perfect summer treat. The fun and cute love confession filled with positive and bright energy will instantly lift up any mood.

In the MV, I could see a lot of dance moves reflecting the upbeat, flirtatious vibe of the song like kissing the hand, giving mischievous look or brushing their hair back. In a press conference, Jimin said “We prepared a song for easy listening rather than a heavy message. It’s cute and a little charismatic.” The winter bear singer V also added that “There are freestyle dances that we came up with on set. We ad-libbed them. We chose what we could express ourselves best and really immersed ourselves.”

Their performance and the choreography at the Billboard music award show was jaw-dropping!! That dance break, hitting every beat was so energetic. I’ve watched their practice video to get a clear picture and noticed that the steps are quite simple compared to their other heavy choreography. The formation and the sub units groups in between the performance was something new and unique. I bet no one can resist listening to this song without shaking their body.

About the song:

When we dig into the lyrics, the song is the confession of a young man about how he melts others heart with just his charismatic looks in flirty manner. As a admirer of Michael Jackson-the king of kpop, BTS start of their song as “smooth like butter/ like a criminal undercover/ Gon’ pop like trouble/ breakin’ into your heart like that” indirectly referring to his song ‘smooth criminal’. It’s not the first time our boys admiring him. They already pulled some of his famous and iconic moves in their song dynamite and gave a heavy performance at MMA 2020 award show. 🤠

The lyrics next goes like “Cool shade stunner/ yeah I owe it all to my mother/ hot like summer/ yeah I’m makin’ you sweat like that”. Wow Taehyung, I mean.. wow!!! As a most fashionable member, Gucci boy, most handsome man of 2020 award holder, the most photogenic person the world has ever seen- He ain’t lying🔥. The pre chorus is then sung by Jin like “Oh when I look in the mirror/ I’ll melt your heart into two/ I got that superstar glow so (oho)”. He is shooting the facts!! The members are well known by many prominent fashion and model industries because of their looks and strong styles. Recently they have been announced as the latest global ambassadors of fashion house Louis Vuitton. 🌟

Then comes the catchy chorus part. “Do the boogie like/ Side step, right, left to my beat/ High like the moon, rock with me baby.” Yesss!! The part which makes everyone wanna dance again and again. 🎶

I loved when they sang like “know that I got that heat/ let me show you ’cause talk is cheap”. I stan the legends 👏🏻. We fans all knew how they were mocked out for their looks in the western countries, how Americans laughed at their language for speaking in only Korean or not knowing English. Despite all the humiliation, embarrassments, and hatred, they have shown their talent and achieved everything through actions!! 💁🏻‍♀️ Yes, I agree. Talk is cheap because action speaks louder than words. They have reached a height where they now got to sing a song in English at their billboard award shows. Isn’t it ironic!? ✨

Verse 2 goes like “smooth like butter/ pull you in like no other/ Don’t need no Usher, to remind me you got it bad”. Here, BTS again expresses their admiration for the American singer and songwriter Usher and his R&B balled song ‘U got it bad.’ That song was about his infatuation with a woman, as he slowly recounts his experience and finally realizes that he had been actually in love with her. They are literally saying they don’t need anyone to remind them how deeply they love their loved ones ❣️

Jin confidently claims that “ain’t no other/ that can sweep you like a robber/ Straight up I got ya/ makin’ you fall like that’. Again, the FACTS!!! 💅🏻

The rappers enter and take in-charge during verse 3. Suga goes like “Ice on my wrist, I’m the nice guy/ Got the right body and the right mind/ Rollin’ up to party, got the right vibe/ Smooth like (Butter), hate us (Love us).” Dope!!!🤘🏻 Here is another shoutout to a hit song “Ice On My Wrist” by Master P. They have done a great job in playing with the words and pulled out some major hits of their favorite artists to mention in this song. 🌈 Then comes RM to melt the army’s heart with his lines as “Fresh boy pull up and we lay low/ All the playas get movin’ when the bass low/ Got ARMY right behind us when we say so/ Let’s go!”. In case you don’t know, BTS fans are affectionately known as Army. Considering RM took part in writing most of the rap parts, no wonder why it is such a heart-warming one!! 💐 In post-chorus, J-hope take the lead “Smooth like (Butter)/ cool shade (Stunner)/ And you know we don’t stop/
Hot like (Summer)/ ain’t no (Bummer)/
You be like, oh my God.” Nothing to say more 👉🏻👈🏻

Enough with the lyrics, let’s now dive into it’s music. It has some good old classic beats and yet gives a young and fresh feel to the listeners. That bass fusion vibe gives a perfect head-bobbing sound effects. It’s so catchy and I’m totally obsessed with it.

Personal likes and dislikes

1. I’m so glad that Jin got some more lines here. The line distribution between the vocalists and rappers were fair and square.

2. The elevator scene with the members freestyle dance move was awesome and stood out the most to me.

3. I missed the voice of our boys rapping in dynamite but got satisfied in this song. The continuous rap parts of Suga, RM and J-hope in the very end left the listeners wanting for more.

4. V’s visuals were dashing as usual. Jungkook’s purple long hair, Jin exposed forehead, rainbow haired Jimin, blonde Hobi, RM’s costume, suga with mullet – showed a whole new side of BTS.

5. The lyrics “Got the army behind us when we say so” and that too by spelling out with letters through their body was so freaking beautiful. Oh my, I was shocked and deeply moved when I heard it for the first time.

6. The sequence of black and white filter giving the raw side of each members was so cool.

7. Jungkook’s “Get it, let it roll” got stuck in my head right after the teaser and now it’s living there rent free ever since.
